
How to Read a Window Energy Label: U-Factor, SHGC, and NFRC Ratings Explained
Every new window arrives with a sticker on the glass covered in numbers. Most homeowners peel it off without a second look — which is a shame, because that label is the only apples-to-apples way to compare one window against another. Learn to read it and you stop relying on sales brochures and start reading the actual test results.
What the NFRC Label Is
The National Fenestration Rating Council is an independent nonprofit that certifies window performance using standardized testing. Manufacturers don't grade their own homework — an accredited lab runs the tests, and the results get printed on the label. If a window has no NFRC label, you have no verified performance data on it at all.
That matters more in Utah than in a lot of places. Between 95-degree July afternoons in St. George and single-digit January nights in Cache Valley, our windows work hard in both directions. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that heat gain and heat loss through windows account for 25% to 30% of residential heating and cooling energy use — so the numbers on that sticker show up on your utility bill.
The Five Ratings, Decoded

A few things worth understanding about these:
- U-Factor is the winter number. It's the inverse of R-value, so a 0.30 U-Factor window insulates roughly like R-3.3. This is the rating that drives your heating bill in a Utah January.
- SHGC is the summer number — but not always. Low SHGC keeps a west-facing living room from cooking in August. On a north-facing wall, a slightly higher SHGC gives you free winter heat you'd otherwise pay for.
- VT and SHGC move together. Glass that blocks more solar heat usually admits less daylight. If a dim room is your complaint, check VT before you commit to the lowest SHGC available.
- Air Leakage is often ignored and shouldn't be. Not every manufacturer prints it. A tight U-Factor means little if the sash assembly leaks.
- Condensation Resistance is optional on the label. If foggy winter glass has been a problem in your home, ask for it specifically.
ENERGY STAR and Utah's Climate Zones
ENERGY STAR sets threshold values that vary by climate zone. Under the Version 7.0 criteria for windows:
- Northern: U-Factor ≤ 0.22
- North-Central: U-Factor ≤ 0.25, SHGC ≤ 0.40
- South-Central: U-Factor ≤ 0.28, SHGC ≤ 0.23
- Southern: U-Factor ≤ 0.32, SHGC ≤ 0.23
Utah's counties don't all fall into the same zone — the qualifying numbers for a home in Logan aren't the numbers for a home in Washington County. Before you shop, confirm your county's zone on the ENERGY STAR key product criteria page. This also matters if you're pursuing federal efficiency tax credits, which are tied to certification rather than to price.
Using the Label When You Shop
A practical way to compare quotes for window replacement in Utah:
- Ask for the ratings in writing, per product line — not "our windows are energy efficient."
- Compare like for like. A picture window and a double-hung in the same series will post different numbers, because frame and sash area affect the whole-window rating.
- Read whole-window numbers, not center-of-glass. Center-of-glass figures look better and don't reflect what gets installed in your wall.
- Match glass packages to orientation. Many Utah homes benefit from a lower-SHGC package on south and west exposures and a higher-SHGC package elsewhere.
- Keep the label. Warranty claims and rebate paperwork often ask for it.
Where the Label Stops
A certified label describes the window, not the installation. An excellent unit set in an out-of-square opening, shimmed poorly, or foamed and flashed carelessly will underperform its ratings — and no sticker will tell you that happened. Craftsmanship in the opening is what turns a good number on paper into a comfortable room. It's also why window repair on a well-installed older unit sometimes makes more sense than replacing it.
